Project Name: Ceramics Workshops

Rationale for Project: Funding is requested for 2 ceramics workshops, both taught by well-known professional ceramic artists. Lorna Meaden's expertise is wheel-thrown functional porcelain pottery (pitchers, jars, teapots, etc.). Esther Shimazu sculpts figures in clay using slab and hand-building techniques.

Total Amount of Funding Request: $2,700 ($1,300 for each workshop)

Date Funds Will Be Needed: Spring, 2023. (Dates to be announced)

Itemized Breakdown of Budget Request (can be emailed separately if needed): Payments is for instructional time for each artist. Lorna Meaden has agreed to teach 2 sessions a day (3 hrs each) for 3 days for a total of 18 hours of instructional time at a rate of $75/hr This schedule will allow the most flexibility for students with the limited number of wheels we have available and Lorna can address individual needs more efficiently.

Esther Shimazu will teach 3 consecutive days of 6 hours of instructional time each day for a total of 18 hours of instructional time at $75/hr.

Each artist will receive $75/hour for 18 hrs for a total of $1,350. Total amount requested $2,700.

Please include a current budget for the proposed project (can be emailed separately if needed): Registration for the wheel workshops would be $50 per 3-hour session for Lorna Meadon's classes. There would be a total of 6 sessions. Students could sign up for one or all. Clay and glaze supplies and kiln firing are included in the registration fee.

Ester Shimazu's workshop would be $250 per student for the 3 days of 6 hours per day. Clay, glaze and kiln firing are included in the registration fee.

Identify who would benefit from funding request (age groups, number and demographics of targeted population): Registration would be open to all individuals, no prerequisite ceramic experience required. Lorna Meaden can teach the basics of wheel-throwing from beginner to advanced. We have 4 wheels available at the Art Center and the split class sessions (one 3 hour session in the AM and one in the PM) will allow for flexibility in level of instruction and participant work schedules.

Ester Shimazu can teach a variety of levels in one sitting. Students would need to attend all three days (6 hours/day) for a finished piece.

What specific goals are you trying to achieve? : The goal is to provide ongoing instruction for interested parties in the techniques of two very different types of ceramics.

How will you evaluate success?: Before and after surveys will be administered asking for informaiton on previous experience and participation goals. A post-survey will assess outcomes of the workshop.

The Art Center gallery can host a show of the completed work.

Other sources of funding the group has received or is planning on applying for: Registration fees as listed in the budget above and would go towards the supplies for the workshop. Since we do not know how many participants to anticipate, the funding we are requesting is for instructor fees only.
